GARDENER - PT (Saturday and Sunday only)

Make the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it at Bok Tower Gardens. Bok Tower Gardens is currently seeking a part-time Gardener (Weekends) to perform weekend nursery and gardening duties which maintain the integrity and beauty of the Gardens and grounds. To be responsible for the care and cultivation of our garden, which includes annual and perennial plantings, pathways, water bodies, lawns, wildlife, garden furnishings. Additional duties assigned from the Nursery pertaining to the production of most of the plant material used in the organization, except large trees, turf, and large quantities of specialty plant material. Plant material is primarily propagated from seed, cuttings, and divisions. In general, the successful candidate will understand gardening practices and plant materials appropriate for the nature of the Gardens. To work independently or in a team effort towards the goal of garden maintenance and preservation.


The successful candidate is a highly-organized individual with a good eye for excellent care and management of the grounds. This position is designed to work Saturday and Sunday (two days) for ten hours a day. (S) he will perform general gardening duties in order to maintain the integrity and beauty of the Gardens and grounds, including:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of plants and planting locations
  • Lawn mowing & care, tree work, leaf removal and irrigation systems
  • General upkeep of the grounds, garden buildings, and equipment.
  • Carry out regular watering and fertilizing needs of the nursery plants by hand watering as well as checking irrigation lines.
  • Maintain greenhouse climate conditions for plant health.
  • Daily inspect nursery plants for growth and health needs.
  • Routine Nursery tasks such as stepping up plants, cleaning the nursery complex, disinfecting tables and pots for their next use, other tasks as they pop up.
  • Planting and care of annual and perennial beds as well as containers
  • Coordinate with Nursery Manager for insect and disease control using IPM methods
  • Prioritize and carry out tasks to maintain the plants and nursery in a clean and orderly state
  • Assist in tracking accessioned plant material, plant production data, pesticide and fertilizer applications, etc.
  • Pruning and maintenance of the main gardens, shrub borders, hedges and other garden plantings
  • Communicate effectively and work closely with the Nursery Manager and Director of Horticulture pertaining to scheduling of plant production when required, plant health, facilities repair and maintenance needs, volunteer program, and other nursery issues and opportunities
  • Assist in areas of the Gardens and nursery, as needed


  • Horticultural education, training, and "hands-on" experience of at least five years
  • At least three years' experience in the estate or public gardening, supported by references
  • Experience in shrub and hedge pruning
  • Familiarity with operating irrigation systems
  • FNGLA certification preferred.


  • Interest in and willingness to learn Central Florida horticulture and the aesthetic ethic of the Gardens
  • Ability to operate various types of power equipment (lawnmower, front-end loader, tractors, etc.)
  • Practical knowledge of the use and basic maintenance of garden equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to understand and interpret instruction to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work outside in the Florida weather year-round
  • Ability to lift at least 60 lbs


  • Continual or prolonged periods of time standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crouching, and lifting
  • Continuous communication and/or interaction with staff, volunteers, visitors, and management
  • Occasional holiday work required to meet departmental deadlines or to provide staff support for BTG special events
  • This position is required and scheduled to work weekends as their primary workdays
  • Working outside in the Florida weather year-round
